I purchased some film this week for my vintage Polaroid camera, before the stocks of film run out. Apparently new film will be produced at some point, but best not to risk it right?!  So, to embrace the little retro hipster inside me, I ummed and erred about what to shoot, especially since at these prices every frame is $3.50 :)

And of course, in the end, it was the little guy that won – shoot what you love, right?  Here’s Baxter, vintage-style:

We are having a weekend off this weekend, so fingers crossed for a wonderful weekend, especially as it feels this week a bit like the warm weather is at an end.  Hope you all have a delicious time!

Over the next month or so, I’ve decided to do a series of posts with some more information about a few things.  Photography trends, words you’ll hear when researching photography & on my site, and how we do what we do.  This is partly a way for me to explain a little more eloquently the answers to a few of the questions I get asked frequently.

First up is boudoir photography.  Boudoir is a growing trend which, like most of them, has emerged from the US photographic scene.  I think it probably has roots in the ‘glamour’ photography of the 80′s, but WOW has it grown up from there.  First & foremost, I’ll come out and say it – yes, boudoir photography is about sexy pictures. Think kick-ass heels, uber-glam lingerie, and a fabulous location.  But if that makes you cringe, think again – it might be something you don’t imagine it to be.  Any boudoir photographer will tell you that it’s not about sleaze, or models, or fashion, or even about sex, it’s about beauty.  Boudoir is a chance for a woman to go all out – feel beautiful, feel sexy, feel glamourous, and have the pics to prove it!

Q: Why would I do it?

A: I can easily think of two reasons – 1: it would make an AMAZING gift for a bride to get her husband-to-be, and 2: it’s a fabulous way to celebrate your own hotness :)

Q: So how does it work? I’d be way too embarrassed!

A: Obviously a certain degree of nervousness is relatively unavoidable, but we do everything we can to minimise it.  If you want to have a glass of wine first, go right ahead! I recommend hiring a hotel room or having the photo session at your home, so that things can be comfortable, private, and glam. The photoshoot is just the client & me in the room, with the camera and a light, nothing more. The thing to remember is that the photoshoot is purely to show off that you’re beautiful. You are.

    Q: Nope. I’m not pretty/thin/confident/sexy enough, am I?

A: Of course you are. Boudoir shoots are about boosting that self-confidence, and everything possible is done to make you feel great about the results – poses, lighting, and photographic editing are all carefully selected to make every client look & feel amazing. You can ask me retouch more or less (or not at all!) depending on your own taste & style.

    Q: I’m worried it’s too sleazy – will people think it’s pornographic?

A: It’s not meant to be that way in the least – no nudity or overt sexuality is involved at all. Not to mention that you don’t have to show anyone but people you choose to!  I don’t post the images here on the site or blog unless you specifically tell me I can, and your images are there for you and the people close to you to enjoy. Boudoir is for sexy, classy ladies!

So, now that you’ve got some food for thought, here are a few images to ponder:

One thing I like to tell my clients prior to their wedding is to search the internet for inspiration. I adore it when couples come to me with some photos that they’ve spotted which perfectly fit their theme, or are exactly what they’re imagining for their own wedding photography. Hopefully, you should have a good idea of what kind of style your wedding photographer has before you book them, but do not hold back on providing them with a guide on what you like – I find it so useful to get some insight into what kind of images will rock my clients’ worlds ahead of time so that I can have that in the back of my mind when we’re shooting on the big day.  Not only are the myriad of wedding sites good for finding some amazing wedding photography, they’re also a great source of inspiration for other wedding details.

Here are a few of my favourite inspirational sites if you’re looking for ideas for your wedding or wedding photos:

    Junebug Weddings

    Style Me Pretty

    Snippet & Ink

    Green Wedding Shoes

    Kiss The Groom

This year, I’m doing a photography project called Project 365.  In recent years it has become immensely popular on the internet, and I’ve always wanted to do it.  This year just feels like a good time to make the effort.  For more info on Project 365, check out http://365project.org/ and the work that other people are doing in the 365 group on Flickr. It’s fairly simple though – take a photo every day.

I have always enjoyed creating amazing memories through my camera lens, and this project is both a way to ensure I’m always looking for new ways to photograph the world around me, and to capture a part of our lives in 2010.

I think it would be kind of overkill (i.e. very boring for you!) for me to post all 365 pictures, but I’ll try to post my favourites every week or so.

Here are some amazing views from Marlborough for the first instalment.

The landscapes down there are breathtaking. If you are having a Marlborough wedding I am available to photograph weddings there for the 2010/11 season.

Welcome to 2010! 2009 was gone in the blink of an eye for us – between a few doors closing and a few new ones opening it has been non-stop action that I could barely keep up with. But I’m back with a vengeance now after a much-needed and truly wonderful break over Christmas and New Year. We were lucky enough to spend a little time in Auckland and in Marlborough to see both of our extended families. I’ll post a little something about that tomorrow when I talk about a project I’ve taken on for 2010.

Today’s post though is about another little trip I was able to take, down to Christchurch. On January 5th I attended a workshop with Orange County wedding photographer Jasmine Star. If you haven’t seen Jasmine’s blog, then head over there immediately.  It showcases her breathtaking work, which is bright, fresh and fun with a twist of fashion.  It also showcases Jasmine’s vibrant personality and her talent for writing, not to mention her adorable dog Polo.

I have no doubt that attending her workshop will change my business and who I am, if for no other reason than that I’m here, writing this now. One thing I walked out of there knowing was that I have to make more of an effort to blog! Hopefully this year’s posts will be much more frequent, and let you know a little bit more about who I am, what I do, and what I do for my clients.

I was also lucky enough to meet some other great photographers from around the country, and get great advice from them and from Jasmine herself.  We packed a lot into a day, not least of which was having an amazing photoshoot.  Our models were beyond sensational, and the Christchurch Arts Centre was a beautiful location.  We had gorgeous sunshine, a bit of a breeze, and, thanks to a nearby bomb-scare (which I mean in the NICEST way possible) we had access to this fabulous tram to shoot in:

The architecture there makes for the most fabulous light and backdrop:

There is nothing quite like real laughter:

Bee-autiful!  When I get them, I will post the details of the dress designer, because these designer gowns were absolutely amazing.

Jasmine’s workshop was the perfect way to kick off 2010. I can absolutely recommend it to other photographers who get the opportunity to go. Jasmine Star Photography’s tagline is “lifestyle photography for fabulous people,” and at the bottom of a little card from Jasmine were the words “stay fabulous.”  That, simply put, is my goal for 2010.
